Reported via desktop in the Crash barriers category by Gary Roberts at 16:30, Tuesday 26 January 2021

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 349953.

The software has not allowed me to attach all of the photographs I have taken, but these are the roundabouts close to the service station at Marston Mortaine, Beancroft Road and the junction of the service road into Lower Shelton. The whole area has been badly neglected and has nothing to do with the current pandemic as it has been like it for a long time. Barriers are broken, signage is missing, A-Frames used by contractors have been left behind, advertising signs have been attached to metal poles (by persons unknown) . A lamp column (at the roundabout close to the old A421)must have been hit about 3 weeks ago and is leaning at a dangerous angle. The sign for Lower Shelton at the top of the service road is missing and along that road there are broken poles sticking out of the ground with jagged edges. The area also floods regularly. In essence the whole length of Lower Shelton up to the three roundabouts at Beancroft Road, need a site visit by CBC Highways Division and the site properly surveyed.

  • the street light has been ordered and work planned. Lorries have been parking on the verge which must have caused the light damage, an order has been issued to dig a bund to stop that.
    Damage to the verges on the service road can be repaired at great expense but will continue with all the storage depots around. The barriers have been repaired in the past, we will just have to remove them. some of these defects are Highways england, we are liasing.

  • Email from resident;

    This email refers to reports I made on the 26th and 27th January last which refers to the roundabouts close to the service station at Marston Mortaine, Beancroft Road and the junction of the service road into Lower Shelton. The whole area has been badly neglected and has nothing to do with the current pandemic as it has been like it for a long time. Barriers are broken, signage is missing, A-Frames used by contractors have been left behind, advertising signs have been attached to metal poles (by persons unknown) . A lamp column (at the roundabout close to the old A421) was backed into by a lorry and is leaning at a dangerous angle. I would happily meet with your officer/s to show you and explain the issues.
    The first acknowledgement I received on my report was on the 12th February and the status was set to CLOSED!!
    However nothing has been done either by Central Bedfordshire Council or Highways England.
    • If there is a shared responsibility at this location then who is responsible for what?
    • Were the areas that are the responsibility of Highways England reported through to them following my report on the 26th January?
    • Why, 6 months on has NOTHING been done and why has the report been closed?
    The state of this location has got far worse since January and is a disgrace. I would be grateful if you could inform me what action, if any, is going to be taken.

    Yours faithfully
    Gary J. Roberts

  • a large sign is being ordered, we are assessing the urgent safety issues as priority.

  • orders have been issued for sign replacement several months ago, this is being chased. I have requested an assessment of the pedestrian barriers as some get hit frequently. Contractors development signs are helpful in preventing vehicles getting lost, so are often tolerated during construction. The st light team is programming the leaning st light. an earth bund is planned to stop lorries parking on the verge.
