Extremely dangerous for pedestrians crossings A600
Reported via desktop in the Crossings category anonymously at 19:21, Wed 10 February 2021
Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 351387.
Pedestrians attempting to cross the A600 (standing with the nursery behind you and Ampthill Road in front of you) is proving to be extremely dangerous due to the speed of vehicles coming onto the roundabout from the A507 from the direction of the Central Bedfordshire Council offices. There is no pedestrian visibility of the traffic coming down the A507 ( from direction of council offices) towards the roundabout but the drivers of the vehicles have a very clear view if there is any traffic coming onto the roundabout from the A507 (coming from the Esso garage direction) or from Ampthill road. If nothing is coming then they are able to enter the roundabout and exit onto the A600 at high speed as they have no visibility of pedestrians trying to cross. Could a Pedestrian crossing be installed similar to that near the entrance to the council offices further down the A507.

Thank you for contacting us in relation to pedestrians crossing the road at the A600/A507 roundabout in Shefford. You have raised concerns regarding specifically the speed of vehicles turning left off the A507 from the west into the A600 heading towards Shefford, and the effect this has on pedestrian ability to cross safety. We have visited the location in question to assess the issues you have raised, including visibility, the speeds of oncoming vehicles, signage and pedestrian use of the particular crossing point. The existing island in the road does assist pedestrians to cross to the middle of the road, rather than having to cross the whole carriageway and vehicles do have to slow down when approaching the roundabout. Following our assessment, we do not consider that further interventions would be appropriate at this location. We appreciate that some vehicles exit roundabouts at inappropriate speeds and recommend that you only cross at the location in question when your cannot see (or hear) vehicles approaching from the westerly direction, regardless of whether they are using their indicators. Thank you once again.
