From Dew Pond Road to Church Road and Cemetery

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 355691.
There is not a safe route for elderly (or anyone else) to get from Dew Pond Road to the cemetery. The pavement is on the other side of the road, the kerbs don't drop at the edge of the road. There is no pavement along Church Road/Temple Way on the Manor Way side of the road. The dropped kerb into Church Road, by the substation, is at a difficult angle to manoeuvre an electric scooter or wheelchair. I tried this route yesterday on my electric scooter, with my daughter walking alongside. We both felt unsafe. There is not another route, without steps to get to the cemetery, where my husband is now buried. PLEASE WOULD YOU CREATE A SAFE ROUTE

Thank you for contacting us with information relating to a Highways issue. Your request has been passed to our Traffic Management Team for further investigation. They will inspect the area, look at existing records and investigate the feasibility of the request. They may need to carry out new surveys and consult local Councils or other bodies. They will consider existing budgets and other requests before deciding on the best course of action. All cases vary but this work can often take 4 or more weeks to complete. Please contact us 0300 300 8049 if you would like more information on the progress of this report.

Thank you for contacting us regarding Church Road in Flitwick.
We receive numerous requests and have to prioritise funding to tackle measures where they are most needed, considering what is reasonable and proportionate to ensure any new scheme provides the most value for our communities. The construction of a new footway along Church Road of approx 130m in length, would cost a significant amount of our annual budget. We are committed to creating an inclusive pedestrian environment and any new housing development proposals are designed to ensure suitable pedestrian provision and improved access for disabled people. Unfortunately, our existing built environment has developed over many years and has been designed to differing standards to those expected today. The cost of trying to bring the whole environment up to these standards is well beyond the level of current public investment. Church Road is not a busy road, with the majority of traffic using the road to access residential properties. We have checked our safety records and no reported incidents have taken place over the last 5 years. With this in mind, we have decided not to progress any further assessment of a new footpath at this location. However, we are going to investigate the concerns you have raised regarding the drop kerb on the south side of Church Road close to the sub station to ensure that it is fit for purpose and provides easy access for a mobility scooter to use.

Further to our report, we have investigated the drop kerb issue raised and can confirm that we do not intend to make any changes at this time. However, we have decided to add Church Road onto our forward plan for a future review to take place to determine what improvements could be made to the area. Thank you once again for your feedback
