New Street, George Street, Bloomfield Dr Shefford

Reported via mobile in the Roadworks category anonymously at 07:22, Wednesday 18 August 2021

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 360632.

Up until recently the newly implemented one way system involving New Street, George Street and Bloomfield Drive, Shefford, was working so well. For the school drop off at Robert Bloomfield Academy it worked particularly well for car drivers and pedestrians alike and was much safer. I thought t was such a good idea to make it one-way and it worked so well. I was therefore shocked to hear that it was no longer one-way. I fear it will be extremely chaotic and dangerous when the schools go back. I would urge council representatives to come and see this for themselves from 8.30am one morning. Many thanks

  • Thank you for contacting Central Bedfordshire Council in relation to the temporary one way system in Bloomfield Drive/George Street/New Street in Shefford
An experimental one-way system was introduced into Bloomfield Drive/George Street/New Street to assist with the Social Distancing requirement for pupils travelling to and from Robert Bloomfield Academy on Bloomfield Drive in 2020. The scheme was implemented under the COVID 19 Emergency Response powers on an experimental basis.
In June 2021, Central Bedfordshire Council carried out a Statutory Consultation on a proposal to make the experimental one-way system in Bloomfield Drive/George Street/New Street on a permanent basis. The results of the consultation were reported to the Traffic Management Meeting on 27 July 2021.
At the meeting, following a number of representations, a decision has been taken to remove the one-way system from these roads. These roads have now reverted back to a two-way operation. CBC Highways Officers will continue to work with Ward Councillors to investigate if alternative measures are required.
