Shenley Hill Road crossroads

Reported via mobile in the Signs category anonymously at 20:45, Wednesday 18 August 2021

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 360667.

Hello, I am writing to you today to raise more awareness of the dangers of the crossroad junction on Shenley Hill Road, Leighton Buzzard. This is the crossroads that connects Mile Tree Road to Shenley Hill Road. There has been several serious accidents at this junction this year and countless accidents at this junction in the years previous. One of which I know was a fatal collision and sadly a man lost his life. There is rarely a time you drive past this junction and there not be some form of car debris in the ditches. My wife had an accident here last week with myself and our 8 month old son in the vehicle too. This has likely resulted in our car being written off. Today there was another accident in exactly the same place. Thankfully all parties involved were able to walk away however some before haven’t been so lucky and next time it could be fatal again. Road signs have been added to the area to make people aware of not only the dangers of the crossroads but also the fact there is a steam railway line across the junction. The signs are far too confusing and there are too many messages to process. Coming from Vandyke Road at 60mph there is no time to stop if a car pulls out across the road out of Shenley Hill Road. It’s not safe. Nothing has really been done to slow down traffic coming by this junction. If you are pulling out of Shenley Hill Road you essentially have to take a risk to pull out and hope nothing is coming. You look left, right, forwards and then do it all again to ensure you are pulling out safely but if a vehicle comes round the bend at 60mph there is very little reaction time for the driver pulling out or the driver coming down the road and this is the exact reason we had an accident yesterday. As mentioned at 60mph there is very little time to slow / brake if a car comes out of Shenley hill road and the views are obstructed by bends in the road too. I do not know what measures are realistically able to be put in place here but something needs to be done before somebody is killed again at this junction. There is a traffic calming island down the road by Vandyke School but this was put in place to stop lorries using Vandyke road. It is also in the 30mph zone. I suggest either side of the junction the speed limit remains 30mph or 40mph and “give way” traffic islands are put in on mile tree road either side of the junction in order to slow traffic down and allow traffic to pull out safely without risking their lives! Even traffic lights would work! Please come back to me with a response ASAP.
