Desperate need for a crossing with ‘lolly pop person’ to support school children safely walking to a from school.
Reported via mobile in the Crossings category anonymously at 11:15, Thu 11 November 2021
Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 363663.
There has been a serious issue at the location for some time now. The road becomes unmanageable at school drop off/pick up times making crossing the road very dangerous for the children attending. The majority of children attending the school have to cross Court Road to get to and from school. The level of traffic and the parking situation along the road makes it challenging to cross. Children are having to cross between parked cars at various points along the street. It is difficult so see cars approaching. There have been at least two incidents recently in which pedestrians have been hit by vehicles in the street whilst trying to walk the children to school. In times when we should be encouraging physical activity and encourage walking to school there is a responsibility of the council / highways to facilitate safe journeys to school.

Further to the previous update, the Road safety team visited the site to assess the situation. Unfortunately, their assessments did not pass the criteria for a school crossing patrol officer due to parents crossing with their children. School crossing patrols are designed for independent walking where adult supervision isnt available. The Traffic management team have also visited the site and can confirm that safety improvements are under investigation. Any proposals to change the road layout/waiting restrictions will be consulted on once they have been drafted, through the normal statutory consultation process, with Notices posted in the location. This process can be lengthy and it is not likely that any amends to the exisiting road will be provided until the summer 2022.
