Front of 6 The Leys Langford

Reported via desktop in the Flooded Property category anonymously at 18:53, Monday 10 January 2022

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 365678.

When it was raining the water runs off the road which is higher than the level that the house stands on (there is no pavement). The water comes straight off the road into the front border under the window and fills it with water up against the front wall of the house. There is a drain further down the road, past the adjoining semi at number 8, but the water is not running along the road to drain into it. Damp in the house suggests this may have been a problem for years. We have had to sand bag across the front of the house against the edge of the road to stop water coming into the house.

  • Thank you for your Highways report.
We are have assessed the area and due to the volume of work needed here and due to budget contraints we are unable to rectify the issue right now however we will look at potentially rectifying this issue in the spring time. We have also offered to provide sandbags to the residents as a temporary measure.

    Many thanks,

  • Email received from resident on Monday, i think before this was inspected.

    Dear Sir/Madam

We have logged a record on FixMyStreet (365678) but would appreciate someone looking into this quickly as any rain water falling on the road outside the front of the house or further up the road is just running into the border in front of the house and essentially it is forming a small pond on the front wall of the house. We have recently bought the house, found it had a damp problem which we have addressed, but had no idea that this was being caused by the water pouring in from the road. We have just had the internal wall stripped off, new damp proof course put in and re-plastered, but this is going to be ruined because the water Is coming so far up the front wall of the house when it rains and so the house will become damp again – which is a health issue. Clearly the fall in the road is incorrect as the water should be running to the surface water drain that is further down the road, but it is not reaching that point – it just falls straight into the front of the house. We have had no option but to sandbag the front of the house up against the edge of the road to stop the water coming in.

    Many thanks
