Church st approach to crossroads

Reported via desktop in the Crossings category anonymously at 20:46, Wed 13 April 2022

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 370508.

New junction is being abused, cars in Church st that are going straight over & into West st are being held up by traffic waiting to turn right into High st South as the lights in West st are allowing traffic to also turn into High st South.

This causes the same issues as before by then stranding vehicles in the middle of the junction. Added to this is that if there’s no traffic in the left hand lane of Church St some vehicles are taking advantage & using that lane to power their way past the traffic heading for West st, which makes this a really dangerous situation.

I was crossing from Church st into West St this evening & narrowly avoided a serious collision with a car approaching from behind who had made the manoeuvre detailed above. This junction is yet again an accident waiting to happen, like many residents of Dunstable we will be forced to avoid this junction, not really what was intended…..

Added to this is the protection for pedestrians crossing diagonally, having watched several people crossing they are also vulnerable as the lights are not stopping all traffic properly, again you are taking your life in your hands & will need to be avoided.

One possible partial solution to this would be to make it 20mph in this area & add some cameras, too many cars think they can drive at full speed
