Lack of footpath

Reported via mobile in the Pavement and Cycle path category anonymously at 22:35, Tuesday 26 April 2022

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 370932.

I would like to central beds to consider a footpath along Astwick Road from, continuing from end of the existing footpath at the derestriction sign down the the bridge at church farm. There is a nursery at the farm and therefore increased pedestrian use. The national speed limit is making life on Astwick road increasingly dangerous for families with young children and dog walkers.

  • Thank you for contacting us regarding Astwick Road in Stotfold.

The Traffic Management team have considered your request for a new footpath along Astwick Road. When decisions are made on how funding is spent to improve our road network, the most serious issues and safety concerns are prioritised. It is important that this decision-making process is validated with fact-based information and that we focus on areas where there is a documented collision history, supported with speed/traffic data when necessary. We have undertaken an assessment to determine the indicative costs of a footway and it is estimated that construction costs would start at approximately £500,000, although Statutory Utility diversions are likely to cost significantly more than we have estimated and we have not included new street lighting in our estimate. To provide some context, the Traffic Management team capital budget is approximately £1.2 million per annum. With this budget we have to deliver the schemes included within our approved Annual Plan. Our existing built environment has developed over many years and has been designed to differing standards to those expected today. We are committed to creating an inclusive pedestrian environment and any new development proposals are designed to ensure suitable pedestrian / cyclist provision and improved access for disabled people. Unfortunately, the cost of trying to bring the whole environment up to these standards is well beyond the level of current public investment.
With the limited funds that are available for our road improvement schemes it would not be reasonable or proportionate to spend upwards of £500,000 for a single scheme, therefore we will not be able to provide a footpath at the location requested
