Dark Lane

Reported via mobile in the Trees category anonymously at 10:42, Tue 2 April 2024

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 404926.

The trees that run along the back gardens of Wharf Mews down Dark Lane are incredibly tall and overgrown. I reported this at the end of 2023 and was told that they couldn't have works done on them at this time but would like this to be reviewed as they are getting increasingly taller and fuller. They are now at least 40ft tall with the branches overhanging all of the gardens in Wharf Mews. If the branches fall off into the garden or even on the public footpath along Dark Lane then this could be very dangerous. The trees also have ivy growing all up the trunks. Having checked the Council's TPO register they have not had works done to them for 20 years and so it is clearly time for some cutting of them.

Updates

  • State changed to: Investigating

Updated by Central Bedfordshire Council at 10:42, Tue 2 April 2024

  • As per our Policy, we are under no obligation to prune trees due to overhang on private property, prune trees because they are perceived to be too big, or prune trees due to lack of light, leaf/fruit drop, bird mess, sap etc. Although these trees are tall, we do not believe their size to be a concern - during inspections we do not believe there to be any obvious safety concerns regarding their general health, vitality, or any of their major limbs. These trees will be inspected again in Autumn and any necessary emergency works carried out urgently if required.

  • Please let us know whether this still requires CBC action. There is an email trail with Planning etc. but I can't determine whether an outcome has been reached.

  • Ourselves and another property owner tried to obtain permission to have the trees reduced in size and height which we were funding at our own cost. We were able to obtain permission from CBC but not Highways so had to change the works and were only able to have some of the overhanging branches cut back. There is still a huge issue with the height of the trees and the overhang both in the gardens and over the public footpath too. The works done were carried out at substantial cost to both ourselves and a neighbouring property because the works really needed doing and the trees were getting dangerous but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to them which we’d be grateful if it could be looked into because it is unfair for us to continue to pay for work.
