All along the pedestrian/cycleway beside B1042 from Sandy to main RSPB headquarters enterance.

Reported via desktop in the Trees category anonymously at 10:13, Fri 7 June 2024

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 407825.

The joint pedestrian and cycleway beside the very busy B1042 between Sandy and the main entrance to RSPB headquarters. The path is overgrown by Bushes and trees which reach to the roadway in places. The verge encroaches up to half way across the path for most of the way. These obstacles make it very difficult and extremely dangerous in places as the road is busy and has sloping bends for fast moving heavy goods vehicles from the quarry to negotiate. The worst affected areas are along the Cycle/pedestrian path beside the Sandy Cemetery and by the entrance to RSPB at the bottom of the hill and all along the pathway beside the RSPB at the top of the hill. The rest of the path is covered up to halfway. This is an issue that has been deteriorating through Spring as everything grows and will obviously continue to get worse until action is taken. The verge encroachment has been getting worse for two or three years. The photos included are a very small sample (you only allow three for some reason) of a set I sent to Central Bedfordshire Council several weeks ago Before they took no action so the problem is significantly worse already and continues to deteriorate.

  • I have heard nothing from anyone about this issue. Are you doing anything at all about this? The situation continues to deteriorate every day.

  • We will be contacting the RSPB as much of their land borders this footway, the majority of the vegetation is their responsibility to prune. I will relay the information around the encroaching grass verge to our Area Team for action.

  • Another customer called regarding this issue. Customer is a mobile scooter user and said that is very difficult to pass through this footpath.

Please can this be investigated and actioned as soon as possible. Do we have any updates from RSPB? when are they going to clear out their part/area?

    Thank you!

  • This route is now far more easily usable. There is still some encroachment near to the Cemetery which we will aim to get sorted as soon as possible.

  • And so it continues with absolutely nothing done regardless of the council claiming things had improved. Bushes naturally dying back in winter does not constitute an improvement. The encroaching bushes are now another year older, larger and stronger and the ground encroachment grows further across the walk/cycleway.

  • We have identified the areas where the hedges/shrubs are still encroaching - we will contact these owners to request action is taken . The remainder of the issue seems to be with the encroaching grass verge. We'd advise this issue is logged seperately if not done so already so it goes through to the correct team.
