Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7207277.
An unnecessary gate has been installed. There is no reason for this gate. It cannot be authorised under S147 of the highways act as it serves no purpose other than to further obstruct the bridleways that run across the front of the Tetworth Estate, which now has 6 gates on them. None of them are authorised and only 2 could be under S147 of the Highways Act.

I've spoken to the landowner who installed the structure and the reason he provided for the gate was to prevent horses escaping from the area which had happened in the past. The Highways Authority can allow such a structure to prevent the egress of animals on land which is used, or being brought into use, for agriculture or forestry or for the breeding or keeping of horses. The gate element of the structure meets the requirement of being 5 feet (1.52m) in width and it has a horse-friendly handle. Rights of Way is, therefore, satisfied that there is a reasonable need for the gate and will allow the structure.
