Flooded and swamp like footpaths to school

Reported via mobile in the Public Rights of way category anonymously at 11:53, Wednesday 5 March 2025

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7229202.

Flooding like a swamp on the footpaths all the way through to the lower school, unable to work the children through the footpath to school huge puddles prevent us from getting through the gates, it's like this the whole year round, it doesn't dry up through the summer. Something needs to be done so we can actually use these footpaths, photos can be provided if this helps please contact me.

Updates

  • Hi. Thank you for your report. I believe these paths were surfaced a while ago by the developer of the houses? We will take a look though you may also wish to contact your Parish Council to discuss. Unfortunately as you will appreciate, the Council budget that goes to public rights of way is very minimal and in terms of surfacing we can only bid for available capital funding each year and there are much more schemes - large bridges and other large surfacing schemes - than there is ever budget for. The number of waterlogging/flooding complaints/requests has also increased significantly the last few years due to an increase in wet autumns and winters but no additional budget has been made available. Photos would be useful if you can provide them. We will do a site visit and discuss with your Parish Council to determine whether the improvement of the paths can be added to a future highways annual capital plan list.

  • I have uploaded photos, this wouldn't cost much to correct looks like it just needs gravel put down but currently kids can't be walked this way to get to shillington lower school because shoes and socks get ruined, this is one of three difficult water logged areas on what would be a 5 mins walk to the school it's not easy trying to walk around it and it's like this the whole year round it doesn't seem to dry up.

  • As a new area officer, I will need to monitor this in the autumn/winter as it has been so dry since I took over two months ago. I did a site visit at the end of March and it was all very dry and I noticed there was an alternative route which I would imagine is more suitable, both routes should be suitable in wellies, as both are rural routes.
