Reported via Android in the Public Rights of way category anonymously at 19:57, Wednesday 19 March 2025

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7306036.

The gate lock is damaged and only swings one way. On horseback, it is very difficult to open a gate pushing it away from you. The gate needs to be able to swing both ways to allow riders to open the gate safely. It does have a horse handle on top but it's only use able if heading towards Doolittle lane but if entering the other way then dismounting is the only option, which isn't always a safe option and there is nothing to help remount on the otherside.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report. This gate conforms to BS5709. 2-way opening is not a requirement of this. 1-way opening gates are common on the network. I will investigate the 'broken lock' but this gate should not have a lock on it and if you are managing to access through the gate then the lock would not seem to be interfering with its operation.
