Abbey Lane, Ampthill

Reported via desktop in the Road Potholes category anonymously at 11:39, Tuesday 1 April 2025

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 421376.

Cycling eastward along Abbey Lane, Ampthill, there is a string of gaps, which are a danger for cyclists. The gaps are very jarring, but are challenging to avoid. Road traffic makes it dangerous to veer towards the centre of the road. During a ride last week, I opted to veer towards the grass verge. In doing so, I touched the verge and tumbled onto it. I am not the only cyclist, who finds Abbey Lane dangerous. A fellow experienced cyclist has commented: “ I’m very careful about riding along Abbey Lane. It’s got really quite dangerous recently. The worst bits for me are the gaps across the road. You have move out from the edge a good 2 ft or so as the gap is wider as they get towards the edge.” The eastbound carriageway needs a full inspection from the tip entrance (52.0225, -0.4858) to the junction with Flitwick Road (52.0190, -0.4785). The westbound carriageway also needs inspection, since there are also hazards for cyclists.
