Adjacent to 12 North Bridge Street

Reported via mobile in the Drains/Ditches Blocked category anonymously at 17:44, Thu 5 June 2025

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 423792.

I’ve reported this twice now. There is a gully drain and the reason the water is pooling and coming in through my front door when car drivers drive through the surface water is because the drain is blocked and not taking the water away. Could this matter now be treated as a matter of urgency please.

  • Thank you for submitting your Highways report.
Our engineers have inspected the area and are satisfied that no further action is required at this time. We have inspected this drain twice recently within 5 hours of heavy rainfall, and each time the surface water had fully drained away. Whilst drainage is slow, it still functions sufficiently to not warrant further action. If the issue becomes worse, please do contact us again.

    Many thanks,
    Central Bedfordshire Council Highways

  • Customer email-forwarded to Area PO, Highways Liaison Team and Insurance Team.

Customer not happy with the update provided.
Please see attached my claim for compensation for the damage CBC have and still are doing to our house. CBC are being negligent in not cleaning the storm drain outside our house which has been going on for years.
It was raining again today and yes the road flooded and yes the cars passing caused tidal waves which are entering our house. It's your responsibility to clean storm drains which I assume is included in the council tax that you are happy to take each month. I've taken more photos and I am building my case all the time, today I videoed the water flooding into the footings of our 18th Century Georgian house so I do foresee further structural damage occurring for such a simple fix. I will be contacting Blake Stephenson MP and making him aware that CBC lacking in the duty of care and being negligent towards my wife and I.
Since my last email I have been researching who is responsible for blocked drains on the highway. I now understand that it's not the responsibility of the National Highways but it will be interesting to see if either of us gets a reply from them. However blocked drains on the highway are solely the council's responsibility so in regards to the drain outside 12 North Bridge Street, Shefford SG17 5DH that is you, Central Bedfordshire Council. As you are aware I am in the process of claiming damages caused to my house
the last time it rained and flooded my house due to the cars causing tidal waves by driving through the standing water.
I have been informed that I should inform the local councils highways department or environmental health department as they are responsible for road maintenance and drainage
in the local area. So far you have said that you are not prepared to take any action with fixing the blocked drain so I see this as negligence on your part. So if I don't hear back within seven days I will be seeking legal advice, speaking to my local mp and citizens advice.

I’m afraid that I cannot accept what “fix my street” are saying, will you be prepared to buy me a new carpet for the hallway everytime it rains. We know that this drain has been a problem for many years now as the previous owner told us that her husband complaint about it numerous times and he’s been dead over two years now. So if thats what you are saying that you are not prepared to do anything about this drain which probably just needs cleaning I will escalate my complaint to national highways and make them aware that every time it rains your drain which I pay to be maintained overflows into my house ruining my carpet and wooden floors. I will also mention that you don’t consider your drain flooding my house and ruining my carpets and rotting my floorboards a priority. Maybe I don’t feel paying my council tax is a priority whilst I have to payout thousands of pounds to replace my wooden floor and floorboards. I will pursue my claim for damages against and when it rains I will claim again and again. In the meantime I will tell National Highways what you’ve said as my local council and I will ask them to get involved.
