The pelican crossing by the barber shop and Snappy snaps/ Phonetech

Reported via mobile in the Signals Timing Issue category anonymously at 08:09, Mon 9 June 2025

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 423883.

The green man doesn’t come on for a long time after the traffic light turns red and isn’t on for long enough for those with mobility issues to cross fully before quickly turning back to red. The timings need adjusting

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting Central Bedfordshire Councils Traffic Signals Team. The crossings on the High Street have recenly been upgraded to the more modern PUFFIN type crossing from the now obsolete Pelican Crossing. The green man is designed to invite users to cross and is not the actual amount of time that user has to cross and is positioned so that once the pedestrian steps onto the road they cannot see the red and green man. There are sensors that will hold traffic on red for a extended period if people are still on the crossing once the red man comes on.

A video explaining how the Puffin Crossings work can be found here
