Lane operated by highways rear of 24 Lynton Avenue, Arlesey

Reported via desktop in the Obstructing visibility, footway, road, or sign category by Chris Malins at 11:35, Thursday 3 July 2025

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 424858.

Overgrown conifers at the rear of 24 Lynton Avenue. They are rooted part in the back of that private property and part in the access lane which is maintained by Central Beds Highways according to Arlesey Town Council. The lane provides access to Gothic Mede Academy car parks, my property 150 High Street, Arlesey, multiple pedestrians including children accessing the recreation/school ground, as well as vehicular access beyond the Highways part of the lane into a farm track with other home back accesses, local allotments and farmland. Accordingly it is a busy mix of vehicles and families on foot. The trees have been superficially trimmed in the past by the owner of 24 Lynton Avenue but are steadily expanding and now protrude approximately 1.4m into the lane, which at approx 4.75m across means that approximately 30% of the lane is restricted both in terms of access and visibility. As the trees are directly opposite my driveway at 150 High Street (which is situated on the lane, not on the main High St) they are making turning in and out of my driveway increasingly difficult in addition to the safety aspects of visibilty in this pedestrian/vehicle mix right next to the lower school.

  • Yesterday the homeowner at 24 Lynton Avenue gave the trees a superficial trim of around 20cm, however the whole line of trees still protrude into the lane/highway by up to 1.2m (now approx 25% the of the width of the lane/hghway) and present all the same issues in terms of visibility and access, plus within the shortest time will have regrown. They need cutting back to within a very close proximity of the fence line such that they will not continuously present and re-present a nuisance.
