Missing road markings and defective signage
Report: The Porz Avenue roundabout has several serious safety defects:
Missing Give Way Markings & Signs
No Give Way lines are painted at the roundabout entries.
No upright “Give Way” signs are present.
This leaves entry priority unclear and increases the risk of collisions.
Misplaced & Misoriented Directional Arrow Signs
The roundabout arrow boards are placed inside the central island instead of aligned with the approaches.
Photo 2 shows one of the arrow signs facing the opposite direction, making it totally ineffective.
This misplacement and misorientation mean drivers are not given clear advance instruction.
Absence of Parking Restrictions
No single or double yellow lines are present near the roundabout approaches.
Vehicles could legally park close to the entries, obstructing visibility and narrowing the carriageway.
No Speed Reduction Warnings
There are no “Reduce Speed Now” or “Slow” warning signs/road markings on the approaches.
With no centre lines or advance roundel markings, drivers may approach the roundabout at unsafe speeds.
Safety Risks:
Drivers entering the roundabout without yielding due to missing markings.
Confusion and hesitation caused by defective signage.
High-speed entries without any speed reduction warnings.
Obstructed sight lines from uncontrolled parking near approaches.
Relevant Duties & Legislation:
Highways Act 1980, s.41 – duty to maintain highways in a safe condition.
Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) 2016 – requires Give Way markings/signs at roundabout entries and proper placement of mandatory directional arrows.
Highway Code Rules 153 & 188 – drivers must reduce speed and give priority at roundabouts, but clear signage and markings are essential to enforce this.
Request: Please inspect the Porz Avenue Roundabout and take urgent corrective action by:
Installing Give Way lines and upright signs at each entry.
Repositioning and correcting the orientation of all directional arrow boards.
Adding yellow line restrictions near approaches to prevent unsafe parking.
Installing “Reduce Speed Now”/“Slow” warning signs and carriageway markings.
These measures are urgently required to make the roundabout safe and compliant with statutory standards.
