Missing / faded road markings and signage
Report: Humphrys Road currently has several serious issues with road markings and parking restrictions:
Faded Double Yellow Lines
Existing double yellow lines are heavily faded, broken, and in some places almost invisible.
This makes them unenforceable and encourages vehicles to park directly on them.
Multiple HGVs, vans, and cars are routinely parked on these faded lines.
Absence of Yellow Lines on Some Sections
Parts of the road have no yellow lines at all, despite being a busy industrial access road.
This leaves long stretches open to unrestricted parking, creating pinch points and obstructed sight lines.
No Parking Restriction Signs
There are no upright parking restriction signs visible along the road.
Without clear signage, restrictions are unclear and cannot be effectively enforced.
Missing Junction Protection
There are no yellow line extensions near junctions to prevent vehicles parking within 10 metres.
This contradicts Highway Code Rule 243 and reduces safety for turning traffic.
No Centre Line
The carriageway has no centre line to divide two-way traffic.
This creates a wide, undefined roadway where vehicles drift across, overtaking occurs unsafely, and parked HGVs force traffic into the same path.
The absence of a centre line increases the risk of head-on collisions, especially at night or in poor weather.
Safety Risks:
Head-on collisions due to lack of a centre line.
Blocked sight lines and narrowed carriageway from uncontrolled parking.
Reduced compliance with faded markings and no signage.
Unsafe manoeuvres at junctions due to missing protection.
Relevant Duties & Legislation:
Highways Act 1980, s.41 – duty to maintain highways in a safe condition.
TSRGD 2016 – requires road markings (centre lines, double yellow lines, Give Way lines, etc.) to be maintained in a visible condition.
Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 5 – recommends centre lines for two-way roads over 5.5m wide with regular HGV traffic.
Highway Code Rule 243 – prohibits parking within 10 metres of a junction.
Request: Please inspect Humphrys Road and:
Repaint and reinstate double yellow lines along the full length.
Extend yellow lines at junctions to prevent dangerous parking.
Install upright restriction signs where required to support enforcement.
Add a dividing centre line to separate two-way traffic and reduce collision risk.
These measures are urgently required to restore compliance and make Humphrys Road safe for all users.

Update on your report:
After inspecting the reported issue, our officers have determined that this doesn't currently qualify as a priority for repair. We will continue to monitor the defect during future inspections and carry out works should it meet our intervention levels in future.
With over 1,400km of road to maintain across Central Bedfordshire, we have to prioritise the work we do as detailed in our Network Maintenance Management Plan (NMMP), which can be viewed on the following page of our website https://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/ info/ 55/ transport_roads_and_parking/ 592/ roads_strategies
