Victoria Terrace Loose Manhole Cover
Reported via mobile in the Road Surface category anonymously at 19:30, Thursday 19 February 2026
Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 437233.
Dear Highways Team,
Thank you for your response confirming that this location has been included within a long-term programme of works.
However, the defect remains unresolved and the noise has not improved. Although the cover has been marked with yellow paint, it continues to move significantly when vehicles pass over it and the resulting impact noise remains severe.
The banging is still occurring every time traffic passes, and during busy periods it is almost constant. At night, it continues to wake myself and my wife, and neighbours from sleep. The issue is ongoing and materially affecting our wellbeing.
Given that the defect is still active and causing repeated night-time disturbance, I do not believe it is appropriate for the case to be marked as “Closed” while no repair has been undertaken. Previous report 436363
We would all be grateful if this could be reconsidered for a temporary repair to eliminate the movement and noise.
If this matter cannot be addressed in the short term, please advise on the appropriate route for escalation.

The manhole cover remains loose and the impact noise worsening. It looks like someone has attempted to fill the cover with gravel, which has not reduced the noise at all. The cover appears to be deteriorating further. This continues to disturb night-time sleep for residents and may pose a safety risk. Please advise on a temporary repair or the expected date for the programmed works.
