Junction of High Street with public footpath at Manor Farm
Reported via desktop in the Public Rights of way category anonymously at 09:17, Monday 13 July 2026
Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council 9 minutes later. Council ref: 16118.
The public footpath shown on the map that goes under the motorway does not exist at the end adjoining the High Street by Manor Farm. It appears to be built over but is clearly still shown on the Ordnance Survey map. The land owner stated that there had not been a footpath for some years but this needs to be investigated as to whether it has been illegally built over, as the alternative road route is dangerous with several bends and fast moving traffic. The other end of the footpath at Redcaps does exist.

Thank you for your report. This is one of our public rights of way anomalies. https://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/ info/ 84/ definitive_map/ 425/ definitive_map_-_modifications/ 2. The path was not accomodated across the M1 by the Ministry of Transport when it was built in the 1950s. The Definitive Map of Public Rights of Way dates from around the same time but there was no rights of way departments as such at the time. We have continued to work with National Highways and adjacent landowners to resolve this anomaly but as yet, we have not been able to do so. As the adage " once a highway, always a highway" applies, the path remains on the Definitive Map as dead end sections to the motorway. As dead end sections, they would be a low priority for enforcement or maintenance and we would continue to look for alternative route options
